Unit 12 The Passive

                                  THE  PASSIVE 

Basic  Formula:

Simple Passive

Subject + be + transitive Verb 3
Continuous Passive

Subject + be + being + transitive Verb 3
be = am, is, are; was, were; been
transitive verb = verb followed by a direct object [She wrote a letter]
intransitive verb = verb used without a direct object [He died suddenly]

Active
Passive
1. Pak Arie Yudhistira wrote letters.
2. Student must understand the lesson
3. My father will buy a car next month
4. The postman had posted the letters
5. I am reading some books
 Letters were written by pak Arie Yudhistira
The lesson must be understood
A car will be bought by my father
The letters had been posted                           
Some books are being read
[Beberapa buku sedang dibaca]


Simple present
active:
passive:
·         The company ships the computers to many foreign countries.
·         Computers are shipped to many foreign countries.

Present Progressive
active:
passive:
·         The chef is preparing the food.
·         The food is being prepared.

Present Perfect
active:
passive:
·         Someone has made the arrangements for us.
·         The arrangements have been made for us.

Simple Past
active:
passive:
·         The delivery man delivered the package yesterday.
·         The package was delivered yesterday.


Modals
active:
passive:
·         You can use the computer.
·         The computer can be used.
